You Watanabe (渡辺曜) is a main character in Love Live! Sunshine!!. She is a second year at Uranohoshi Girls' High School. She is a member of CYaRon! and YYY (わいわいわい), two sub-units under Aqours. Her image color is light blue.
She was a second-year student at both Uranohoshi Girls' High School prior to its closure and Seishin High School (albeit temporarily) before fully integrated into Numazu High, ending the series going into her third year.
Background
She is a second year and a classmate of Chika Takami, who is her childhood friend along with Kanan Matsuura. Her catchphrase is "Yousoro!" (ヨーソロー！ lit. Aye Aye!), on which she salutes like a sailor. This is often accompanied by the phrase "Zensoku zenshin!" (全速前進！ Full speed ahead!). Her live concert call and response is "[Location or Anata] ni Mukatte, Zensoku Zenshin..."->"Yousoro!"->"Kara no"->"Keirei!".
Her father captains a ferry and she would like to have his job someday. While her father is not shown in the original TV series he is mentioned often by You. There was a illustration of her father for the series Genjitsu no Yohane -SUNSHINE in the MIRROR-, in which it is shown that he has short light greyish-brown hair and blue eyes very similar to You.
In the first episode, on a trip to Tokyo with Chika, the two learned about school idols and the Love Live! tournament after seeing a screen with school idols at the Akiba Dome, including µ's. After Chika becomes fascinated with the idea of school idols, You follows her into opening a school idol club of their own at their high school. Chika and You being the founding members of Aqours (the second rendition), go on to recruit the rest of the seven members throughout the series.
Within the school idol club she is apart of the sub-units CYaRon! and YYY, CYaRon consists of You, Chika, and Ruby Kurosawa. Their unit color is orange, and their fans are called "CYaRotomo" (しゃろとも Sharotomo). YYY is a subunit formed under Aqours in honor of the Uranohoshi Girls' High School RADIO with the three members who served as hosts for the radio show, those members being You, Ruby, and Yoshiko Tsushima. The Image Color for YYY is bubble color.
She also has a cousin named Tsuki Watanabe, who lived in Italy and now is a third year student at Numazu High School.
Personality
You is an energetic, tomboyish and positive girl with an outlook of focusing on her goals, which can sometimes cause her to take action without thinking things over first. Her positive attitude also makes her one of the more charismatic members of the group. Since she would like to have her father's job as the captain of a ferry, she tends to salute when she says her catchphrase "Yousoro!", often in the place of "hello" and "good-bye".
You loves the friendship she has forged with Chika over the years, so she slowly grew jealous of Riko Sakurauchi's friendship with Chika when she invites her to join Aqours. This is hinted in Season 1 Episode 10, and is expanded upon in Season 1 Episode 11 when the members of Aqours find out the group originally consisted of her and Chika, rather than Chika and Riko. After Mari Ohara confronts her on it, You expresses her feelings to her best friend, and stops being jealous of Riko.
Clubs and Hobbies
Due to her upbringing, her daily routine includes weight training and running. You is shown to have many talents: one of them is high diving, and she is good enough at it to qualify for the national team. She can also intuitively forecast the weather. She is also a very good chef, able to cook and turn Yoshiko Tsushima's and Mari's prepared dishes into curry as seen in Season 1 Episode 10. She loves the uniforms of uniformed occupations, which is why she acts as Aqours' wardrobe supervisor alongside Ruby Kurosawa, able to illustrate concept art of idol costumes and make them with no prior experience
Appearance
You has a slim figure and is athletic. She has curly light greyish-brown hair that reaches her shoulders and has light blue eyes. She is most often seen in her sailor uniform with both summer and winter variants, the summer being short sleeved with a necktie and the winter being long sleeved with a bowtie. In some depictions there is also a black sailor uniform with long sleeves and a white necktie with a similar appearance to the summer uniform. While often depicted wearing glasses she can be seen wearing them in episode 11 of the first season of the anime.
You's main attire other than the Uranohoshi School Uniform, mainly consists of clothing such as shorts and hoodies along with baseball caps leaning towards her more tomboyish traits. She is also depicted in media such as Music Video's and Magazines wearing a one piece competition swimsuit as one of her main outfits that differs in appearance to the rest of the main characters due to her being in the Swimming/Diving club.

Aside from having songs with Aqours and Sub-units within the club, You has 4 solo songs so far. The first solo song of hers to be release was Beginner's Sailing with the limited edition release of Love Live! Sunshine!! TV Anime Season 2 Blu-ray 4. Her second solo song, Totsuzen GIRL (突然GIRL lit. Spontaneous GIRL), was released alongside Beginner's Sailing on her first solo album on April 17th, 2021. Her third solo song, Paradise Chime, was released with her second solo album on April 17th, 2022. With the third solo album and her fourth solo song Ao no Aurora releasing on the same date the following year. Her fourth solo album does not contain any new solo songs.
With You winning the first Love Live! Sunshine!! popularity poll, she was selected as the center for Aqours second single Koi ni Naritai AQUARIUM (恋になりたいAQUARIUM lit. I Want To Fall In Love AQUARIUM), which released along with a music video on April 27th, 2016 on both CD and DVD/Blu-ray disc. The music video for the single portrays her dynamics with her fellow second years Chika and Riko which would play out in a similar way in the anime later that year.
While not being a You specific song, she is also the center for Aqours Pirates Desire. Which is the coupling song for Fantastic Departure!, the theme song for Aqours 6th Love Live! Dome Tour which was cancelled and later replaced by the Aqours 6th LoveLive! ～KU-RU-KU-RU Rock ‘n’ Roll TOUR～.

Etymology
- The name You means "day/weekday, sun" (曜).
- You's surname Watanabe means "transit, ford, ferry, cross, import, deliver, diameter, migrate" (渡) (wataru) and "environs, boundary, border, vicinity" (辺) (be).
- Watanabe is is a common surname in Japan.
Trivia
- You fulfills the pure attribute of the Aqours second years.
- In the early stages of Aqours, You was originally a first-year student.
- You owns a white and yellow snapback with her name printed (YOU) in red letters, she usually wears it during practice.
- In real life, You's home is based on Cafe Orandakan.
- You has similar features to µ's members Kotori Minami and Hanayo Koizumi; her hair is similar in design to Hanayo's, but longer and looser (Hanayo's hair ends mid-neck while You's reaches down to her shoulders). She and Kotori share the same light greyish-brown hair color.
- Using SIF attribute as another factor, this is further supported as You is a 2nd Year Pure, which is the same as Kotori's status and is the same attribute as Hanayo's.
- "Yousoro" is a ship command which means to straighten the ship. After giving a steering instruction, the captain issues this command to tell the helmsman to straighten the ship in the direction it is facing now.
- Since her name looks like the English pronoun, it leads to some puns and jokes by the fandom.
- You was voted by fans on the AbemaTV special for SIF All-Stars in January as the Aqours member most likely to star in a morning drama.
- You Watanabe was originally Japan's favorite Aqours girl. Winning the 2nd Single Center Election Poll making her the "Leader" for their second single: Koi ni Naritai Aquarium.
- In the December 2019 issue of Dengeki G's, the editors tallied how many times You had said "Yousoro!" throughout the anime - 12 times in the first season and 6 times for the second. Their count for the number of times she saluted someone was 26 in season one and 13 in season two.
- You shares the same birthday as Himeno Ayanokoji.
