Kanon Shibuya is the primary protagonist in Love Live! Superstar!!. She was a third-year student at Yuigaoka Girls' High School until she graduated in the anime's series finale. She is a first-generation member and the leader of Liella!, as well as a member of the sub-unit CatChu!. She was also a member of TomaKanoTe. Her image color is marigold.

Background

While singing has always been her most cherished pastime, Kanon is more likely to be seen helping her mother manage the family cafe, serving customers their special baked apples with cream. Kanon's father works as a translator and her grandmother is from Spain, whose homemade paellas are one of Kanon's favorite dishes. As her home, Kanon has had many fond memories of the cafe, with much of her time there spent alongside her childhood friend, Chisato Arashi. Together they would often interact with Kanon's pet owl, Manmaru ("Roundy"), who now serves as the cafe's ever-popular mascot.

Personality

Kanon is seen as being somewhat shy and flustered, admitting that she is not good at communicating in front of others. However, while walking in town Kanon would often listen to music on her headphones, and would usually find herself singing the words to a song. Although she yearns to sing in front of people, Kanon is particularly nervous about doing so. Despite seeing herself as being very ordinary - having no particular talents or aspirations for her life - Kanon wishes to cheer people up through her favorite songs. Deciding to become a school idol was a way for her to do so, and to break away from merely seeing herself as simply "normal." But even though she thinks girly outfits are cute to look at, Kanon is a little shy and apprehensive about wearing anything too frilly or slightly revealing.

Her favorite saying is, "It's always sunny above the clouds."

Kanon, despite being more shy than previous protagonists Honoka Kosaka and Chika Takami, has nonetheless a natural charisma and people orientation. She is very kind-hearted, friendly, cheerful, passionate and supportive. She's a selfless and loyal friend, with sense of justice, and used to front bullies who threatened Chisato when they were children. She's shown to like animals, as seen when she plays with a stray cat on the street.

She's very charismatic, with a magnetic personality and a natural affinity for people. Not only she loves to help others, she's also willing to befriend them, even when they don't treat her well at all, as seen in her interactions with Wien. It's also shown she can be idealistic to the point of being naive, finding good where more cynical characters wouldn't (for example, unlike Sumire, she didn't believe that Natsumi was actually the gold-digger she turned out to be).

Despite her natural kindness, Kanon has a more boyish and blunt side, displayed when she's at home and in her more nervous moments. Though this happens mostly at the beginning, due to her personal frustration and considering herself a failure before she met Keke.

Appearance

Kanon has a slim figure with orange hair that reaches her shoulders and has purple eyes.

Clubs and Hobbies

Kanon joined the school idol club with Keke Tang and she mentions her dream is to own a cat.

In the second season, she becomes the vice president of Yuigaoka's student council.

Etymology

• The name Kanon is written in hiragana (かのん), which has no special meaning. However, the official Chinese-subbed version of the 2nd season anime PV revealed that her name when written in kanji is 香音, which could mean "fragrant sound".
• Shibuya is a well-known place name, but it also exists as a surname. (澁) (shibu) has various meanings. In this context, it suggests stagnant or slow-flowing water. And (谷) (ya) means "valley".

Trivia

• Along with Ren Hazuki, Kanon fulfills the cool attribute of the Liella! third years.
  • She is the first idol with an orange image color to not be a smile attribute, and currently the only one not to be a second year.
• Kanon's family's cafe was initially modeled after Cafe Casa, an actual cafe located in Shibuya. However, the owner did not fully agree with Love Live staff to use the building's likeness, and due to several incidents involving the Love Live fanbase such as some Japanese fans review-bombing the establishment and elaborate cosplayers taking unauthorized photo shoots on the premises, the owners and anime staff came to an agreement that they would no longer use the building as Kanon's home in the anime series, and it was changed to not further resemble Casa Cafe
• The headphones Kanon wore in the Anime is the WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise-Cancelling Over-The-Ear Headphones by Sony. The color variation she uses is the limited edition "Silent White" color.
• Unlike the character design and the illustrated visuals seen until the 9th volume of the Love Live! Days magazines, later depictions of Kanon is shown wearing mid-calf socks instead of tights.
  • The Super Special Series Kanon figurine by FuRyu is the only PVC figure depicted with her tights.
• Kanon wears glasses, though only at home.
• Even though she does not want to be a fashion-concious person, Kanon always does her hair carefully in the morning. At home, sometimes she ties her hair up as seen in the anime.
• Kanon had always taken her bangs for granted until she became a school idol, and it became her signature after receiving numerous compliments on how cute they were.
• She often sings out loud while taking a bath, which annoys her mother and younger sister.
• She often confess to Manmaru about things she would rather not say to others. She said she would always be honest every time she looked into Manmaru's round eyes.
• When she cannot think of new ideas for writing lyrics or essays, she often do a yoga pose, which she calls the "concentrating pose".
• As of October 2022, Kanon's Spanish ancestry is considered as non-existent in the anime timeline, as neither this nor her grandma was mentioned.
