Yoshiko Tsushima is a main character in Love Live! Sunshine! and a member of Aqours. She is a first-year student at Uranohoshi Girls' High School during the anime. Following the events of Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie: Over The Rainbow, she transfers to Numazu High School as a second year. She is also a member of Aqours' subunit, Guilty Kiss. Her image color is white, but she is generally represented as grey.
Background
Yoshiko lives in the urban core of Numazu with her family. When she was very young, she attended a kindergarten. It was here that she met Hanamaru Kunikida, and the two formed a sort of early friendship.
While attending kindergarten, Yoshiko developed a feeling that she was somehow different from her peers. This, in addition to her habitual bad fortune, led her to believe that she was a "fallen angel". It was at this time that she began preferring to go by the name of "Yohane". She developed an interest in magic and the occult. This persisted throughout middle school and made Yoshiko feel even further ostracized from her peers.
At the beginning of the anime, Yoshiko attends her first day at Uranohoshi with the intention of abandoning her fallen angel persona. After continuously relapsing into "Yohane", she attempts to avoid attending school.
After being discovered by Hanamaru, Yoshiko is invited to join Aqours by the group's leader Chika Takami. Despite some insecurities she experiences over her worthiness as an idol, she is accepted and welcomed by Chika and the other members. Yoshiko eventually commits to being a permanent member of the group at the end of "Yohane Descends".
Personality
Yoshiko's personality can differ depending on whether or not she is performing her "Yohane" persona or not. As "Yohane", Yoshiko acts very theatrical and menacing. She is known to break into monologue or cause a large public scene. Yoshiko is very irritated when called by her real name, and will correct anyone who doesn't address her as such (something that becomes a running gag in the anime). As "Yohane", Yoshiko refers to her fans and friends alike as "little demons". In her free time, Yoshiko live streams online as "Yohane" in an attempt to grow and "convert" a legion of "little demons".
When not performing as "Yohane", Yoshiko can be rather reserved and self-conscious. As a young child, Yoshiko developed her persona as a way to differentiate herself and make herself feel unique. As she grows older, she loses a desire to be unique and begins to wonder if life would be better as a "normal" girl. She is aware of how her fallen angel persona scares people away from her, and holds some desire to live a "normal" life. It is only after she is accepted by Aqours that Yoshiko decides it's okay for her to continue to embrace and continue a life as "Yohane".
Yoshiko is noted as having incredibly bad luck, something she says is a result of her status as a fallen angel. In her character introduction, it is described that "whenever she goes on a field trip, rain is bound to follow. Whenever the snow falls, she always slips on it. She's never won anything in the lucky grab at the convenience store. She always catches the flu right before finals."[1] This bad luck occasionally spells misfortune for Aqours, and Yoshiko is very ashamed of her luck's contribution to this misfortune.
Despite her sometimes loud and performative nature, Yoshiko is kind and caring to her friends. She feels indebted to her Aqours colleagues for their embrace of her weirdness. During serious moments, such as during "The Time Left", Yoshiko is capable of putting her fallen angel act aside and approaching situations with genuine compassion.
Clubs and Hobbies
In the anime, Yoshiko is shown to practice fortune telling (to mixed results). She is also depicted in official art as playing video games, and live streaming. In Love Live! School Idol Festival ALLSTARS, Yoshiko begins uploading video game footage online as a sort of "Lets Play" youtuber. Yoshiko is responsible for video editing in Aqours, and is also shown helping with costume design.
Appearance
Yoshiko Tsushima has long, dark blue hair usually styled in a side bun on the left of her head. Her eyes are a striking deep magenta. Outside of school, she typical wears stylish, often dark colored, gothic outfits. Yoshiko has a slender build and carries herself with a dramatic, confident posture.

Etymology
- The name Yoshiko means "good/goodness, right, virtue" (善) (yoshi) and "child" (子) (ko), which translates to "good life child" altogether.
- Her nickname Yohane (ヨハネ) is a common Japanese biblical spelling of "John". The latter is ultimately derived from the Hebrew male given name Yôḥānān, a shortened form of Yəhôḥānān (which roughly means "God is gracious").
- Yoshiko's surname Tsushima means "haven, port, harbor, ferry" (津) (tsu) and "island" (島) (shima). [2]
Trivia
- Yoshiko is the only member of Aqours to live in the urban core of Numazu. The other 8 members live in the smaller rural area of Uchiura (or specifically in Mari & Kanan's case, Awashima Island).
- Yoshiko's apartment building is styled after a real building in Numazu, located beside Numazu Riverside Hotel. The hotel has a display cabinet located near the main lobby with Aqours (and especially Yoshiko) merchandise displayed
- Yoshiko is the star of the only Love Live! anime spinoff (to date), Yohane the Parhelion -SUNSHINE in the MIRROR-
- Yoshiko seems to enjoy spicy food. In the anime, she prepares takoyaki filled with tabasco sauce. She calls these "Tears of the Fallen Angel".
- Despite her sometimes aloof and clumsy personality, Yoshiko is academically quite intelligent.
