Riko Sakurauchi (桜内梨子) is a main character in Love Live! Sunshine! and a member of Aqours. She is a second year at Uranohoshi Girls' High School. after transferring at the beginning of the school year from Otonokizaka High School. She is a member of Guilty Kiss, a sub-unit of Aqours. Her image color is sakura pink.

Riko transfers to Seishin High School (albeit temporarily) before Uranohoshi is fully integrated into Numazu High, ending the series going into her third year.

Background

Riko attended Otonokizaka High School in Tokyo, studying music. She had learnt to play the piano from an early age, but hit a snag in her musical career during her time at Otonokizaka. Finding herself unable to "hear the music" during a piano recital, her family relocated to Uchiura for a change of scenery.

It is in Uchiura that Riko meets Chika Takami and You Watanabe (the former of which is her neighbour). Chika invites Riko to join their school idol club, requiring the skills of a musician to help them compose songs. Although initially hesitant, Riko eventually agrees what would eventually become Aqours, believing it to be a potential pathway back into music.

Personality

Riko is a kind, soft-spoken girl who is well mannered and sweet-natured. She is quite modest and unwilling to flaunt her talents, especially in music. Due to her prior struggles with performing, she's initially quite hesitant to use her talents. She only agrees to eventually help Chika and You after being inspired by their passion for school idol activities and the μ’s song, Yume no Tobira.

Despite generally being quite reserved, Riko can have a quick temper and is quick to lash out at Aqours' less orderly members, like Chika and Yoshiko Tsushima. Riko, in a manner not unlike Dia Kurosawa likes to maintain order and productivity within Aqours. This often runs in contrast to Chika's more playful, energetic approach.

Riko has a fear of dogs, especially Chika's dog Shiitake. The fear is not exclusive to large dogs, as she is frightened even by much smaller dogs at various points during the show. She slowly begins to overcome this fear after helping Yoshiko care for a lost dog in Taking in A Dog.

Throughout her journey with Aqours, Riko slowly learns to loosen up and acts a bit more aloof. With time, she regains her passion for composing, overcomes her fear of dogs, and acts more playful with her friends (such as accidentally engaging with Yoshiko's "fallen angel" fantasy).

Clubs and Hobbies

Riko is best known for her love of the piano. In addition to her skills as a performer, Riko also composes music for Aqours. Her official biography lists drawing, handicraft, and cooking as her hobbies. Riko is also shown to have an appreciation for girl's love doujinshi.

Appearance

Riko has long, flowing burgundy hair that reaches past her shoulders, usually adorned with a white hair clip on the left side. Her eyes are a soft shade of magenta. She has a slim figure and generally wears elegant pink or white clothes.

Songs

Riko has a total of four solo songs to date. The first, Pianoforte Monologue was released with the Love Live Sunshine!! Season 2 Bluray volume 3. The next three; PURE PHRASE, Love Spiral Tower, and Minamo ni Piano were released alongside her solo albums.

In contrast to her solo songs, Riko has released multiple songs as a part of Guilty Kiss. These songs embrace more hard-rock inspired instrumentals.

As a member of Aqours, Riko has split center privileges with Chika Takami on 3 occassions; Kimi no Kokoro wa Kagayaiteru kai?, Brightest Melody, and Smile! Smile! Ship start. She has also had her own solo centers in Kimi no Hitomi o Meguru Bouken and Wake up, Challenger (which was the second song Aqours released for the mobile game Love Live! School Idol Festival ALL STARS.

Chronology

Other Data

Etymology

  • The name Riko means "pear" (梨) (ri) and "child" (子) (ko).
  • Riko's surname Sakurauchi means "cherry blossom" (桜) (sakura) and "inside, within" (内) (uchi).[1]

Trivia

  • Riko (to date) is the only known character to attend the school's of two different Love Live! Champions
  • Unlike in the anime, the manga adaptation of Love Live! Sunshine! explains that Riko moved to Uchiura as a result of her father's work.
  • Within Guilty Kiss, Riko has a "special attack" called the "Riko-chan Laser Beam" or sometimes simply "Riko-chan Beam". This alludes to her joking with Chika about her status as a "normal monster".
  • Riko's home in the anime is based off of an identical home adjacent to Yasudaya Ryokan. Unlike in the anime, the two buildings are very far apart. This makes it highly unlikely that she would be able to communicate or interact with Chika in a manner similar to how they do in the anime.
