Ruby Kurosawa (黒澤ルビィ) is a main character in Love Live! Sunshine! and a member of Aqours. She is a first-year student at Uranohoshi Girls' High School during the anime. Following the events of Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie: Over The Rainbow, she transfers to Numazu High School as a second year. She is also a member of Aqours' subunits CYaRon! and YYY. She is also a member of the special sub-unit AiScReam. Her image color is pink.[1]. She is Dia Kurosawa's younger sister.

Background

Ruby lives in a rural home in Uchiura with her parents and sister Dia. The Kurosawa family is a relatively well known and powerful family in the region, responsible for the operation of many local businesses.

From a young age, Ruby had an interest in school idols. This was in part due to her sister's similar interest in them. Ruby and her sister were both fans of the group μ's until Dia mysteriously lost interest. Ruby continued to follow idols, but kept it to herself. She met Hanamaru Kunikida in middle school while reading idol magazines in the school library. The two very quickly became close friends.

Shortly after graduating middle school and enrolling at Uranohoshi, Ruby meets Chika Takami and You Watanabe. After seeing the duo perform alongside Riko Sakurauchi, she's inspired to join their group. Despite fearing her sister's disapproval, Ruby takes a leap of faith and earns Dia's approval. After officially joining Aqours, Ruby invites Hanamaru to join alongside her, positive that they share a mutual adoration of school idols.

Personality

Ruby is very shy and timid, which makes it hard for her to get along with other people. She has a tendency to utter or scream "Pigii!!!" when she doesn't like something; in the event she screams, her face will turn red as she does so. She has never talked to any males besides her father before, so she has always been bad at dealing with the male gender. Although she is fearful and easily upset, she does has a tough interior forged by her role as the daughter of a rich, well-known family.

Ruby is very close to her friend, Hanamaru. She also meets Leah Kazuno in TOKYO, who she also becomes very close with.

From a different perspective, Ruby is adaptable and mostly admired by her friends, and they support her no matter what; despite the fact the Second Years are considered "the heart" of Aqours, Ruby does not have difficulty getting along with the rest of the group unlike her fellow First Years' or the Third Years', as seen in Season 2 Episode 2. Her catchphrase is "Ganbarubii!" (がんばルビィ！ lit. "Rubesty"), a portmanteau between "ganbaru" (頑張る try with full effort) and her own name; she uses this phrase to encourage herself or others to do their very best. Ruby also speaks in the third person from time to time, just like Hanamaru. However, she tends to use "watashi" as a first-person pronoun.

Due to the strong bond she shares with her sister Dia, Ruby will immediately display her tough interior and defend her sister when a negative point of her is brought up, as seen in Season 2 Episode 8. Ruby is also shown to have a playful and mischievous side of her when she teases Yoshiko Tsushima's Fallen Angel behavior and her embarrassing moments (alongside Hanamaru), which annoys Yoshiko all the time. She also despises spicy food, as seen in Season 1 Episode 10, when she eats a takoyaki filled with tabasco sauce instead of octopus sauce.

Clubs and Hobbies

Her hobbies are needlework and fashion. Her talent is in coordinating outfits, which makes her, alongside You Watanabe, Aqours' wardrobe supervisor. Like her sister Dia, she displays an admiration for other idols, despite coming from a traditional family.

Appearance

Ruby is short with a slim figure and semi-long red hair which she ties into twintails and turquoise eyes.

Etymology

  • Ruby's surname Kurosawa means "black" (黒) (kuro) and "marsh" (澤) (sawa).

Trivia

  • Ruby fulfills the pure attribute of the Aqours first years.
  • Ruby's favorite member of µ's is Hanayo Koizumi. (In the manga adaptation, Ruby's favorite µ's member is Rin Hoshizora.)
    • Both are first years that fulfill the pure attribute.
    • Both are shy members and are best friends with a cheerful one (Rin and Hanamaru).
  • In real life, the Kurosawa mansion is based on the Okawa mansion, which has been designated a cultural heritage property of Numazu since the Edo period. The historical owner of the mansion was also a wealthy family involved in fishing management, similar to the Kurosawa family.
  • Ruby had long hair before starting middle school.
  • Ruby owns merchandise of a character named Paaru-chan, one of which being a coin purse she typically wears on her practice clothes.
  • Aside from the Official Introduction and the manga adaptation of Sunshine!!, Ruby's androphobia is not utilized in her subsequent appearances since the anime.
