Sumire Heanna is a main character in Love Live! Superstar!!. She was a third-year student at Yuigaoka Girls' High School until she graduated in the anime's series finale. She is a first-generation member of Liella! and a member of the sub-unit CatChu!. Her image color is melon green.[1]

Background

Sumire who lives with her parents and a little sister has always lived the life of a performer. Having been thrust into show business as a child, she intensely devoted her formative years to the craft of pleasing an audience. She avoided extracurricular activities in an attempt to balance such a life, but after entering Yuigaoka High, Sumire would enthusiastically take on the idea of becoming a school idol. Sumire lives at a shrine and often helps out as a maiden. She enjoys studying Japanese and Japanese history.

Personality

Being in the entertainment world for so long, Sumire believes her experience and knowledge of its workings is second to none. Somewhat of a prima donna, Sumire assumes that most people already know her name. Somehow attached to the idea of her own stardom, Sumire dreams of becoming a famous school idol not just in Japan, but "across the galaxy." But Sumire also takes her more earthbound duty as a shrine maiden very seriously, warning those like Kanon to not aimlessly ask the gods to do everything for them, such as helping them become school idols. Instead, Sumire believes that they should do their best together without help from the gods and make their own wishes come true.

Sumire was shown to be a confident character who was very self-assured. However, this was most likely a mask. Through a few episodes, we see Sumire always being chosen as second place. Her goal is to become world famous or something similar. However, she feels like she is always the second option and that is clearly shown in episode 10. She feels like she's the worst, so she always acts like she's the best. At the end of episode 10, we finally see Sumire embracing her emotions.

Her favorite saying is, "Faith will move mountains," and her catchphrase is "Galaxy~!!!".

Appearance

Sumire has a slim and tall figure with long legs, long hime cut blond hair, melon green eyes, and wears a red headband. She is considered to possess ideals of an all-round natural feminine beauty.

Etymology

  • The name Sumire is written in hiragana (すみれ), which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji (菫), it could possibly mean "violet (flower)".
  • Sumire's surname Heanna means "flat, broad, level, even, peaceful" (平) (he), "peace, quiet" (安) (an) and "name, noted, distinguished, reputation" (名) (na). While the surname may be found in Okinawa, there is no portrayal or indication of being from Okinawa in the context of the work. The name derived from a place name, "he" means "flat" or "level," but the meaning of "anna" is unclear.

Trivia

  • Along with Chisato Arashi, Sumire fulfills the smile attribute of the Liella! third years.
  • The shrine that Sumire is seen attending her duties resembles the real-life Onden Shrine in Shibuya. As established in Love Love! Days Vol. 13, the Onden Shrine is situated close to Yuigaoka High School.
  • The "Street Corner Galaxy☆彡" episode shows that Sumire has an interest in isopods, as she tries to get a plush of one from a crane game and chanted "Giant Isopods~" while trying to cleanse Kanon. Additionally, when she was a child and during a stage play, instead of being the main casts, she was chosen to be a background character and was put into wearing an isopod costume.
  • As seen in Check It Out!!, Sumire is talented in freestyle rapping.
