Sora Tokui (born December 26, 1989) is a Japanese seiyuu and mangaka from Minamibōsō, Chiba Prefecture. She is commonly known by the nickname "Soramaru." She voices Nico Yazawa one of the main characters in Love Live! School idol project.

Her call-and-response during concerts begins with a variant of "Sore dewa minna-san go issho ni" ( lit. And so everyone together now), followed by a simultaneous "Nico Nico Nii~" with the audience. During the 5th live, she added the secondary line "Dai ginga uchuu?" ( lit. Milky Way Universe?), to which the audience responds "Number one!" This is a reference to Season 2 Episode 4 where Nico proclaims herself as the Number 1 Idol in the Universe.

She is currently affiliated with Avex Pictures.

Background

Tokui was born into a family of karate practitioners and has a younger brother. She graduated from Dwango Creative School, a voice acting and vocalist training school operated by MAGES. Inc.

She first gained recognition as a third-generation contestant in "Takeshi Washizaki's Animelo Newcomer Audition" (2008–2009). Tokui made her voice acting debut in 2009 as Himiya in the anime series Weiß Survive R. That same year, she became a member of the singer group Milky Holmes, alongside Suzuko Mimori and other main voice actresses from the Tantei Opera Milky Holmes franchise. In 2010, she made her major debut as Nero Yuzurizaki in Tantei Opera Milky Holmes.

Beyond voice acting, Tokui is also a manga artist; her four-panel manga Mahou Shoujo Jitaku-chan began serialization in Otapoke magazine in 2011.

Tokui gained further prominence as a member of the idol unit μ's from the popular Love Live! anime series. With μ's, she performed at the 66th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen on December 31, 2015, one of Japan’s most prestigious music events.

In April 2012, she was appointed as the tourism ambassador for her hometown of Minamibōsō in southern Chiba Prefecture.

On March 20, 2018, Tokui announced via Twitter that she would be leaving her longtime agency Hibiki at the end of March, and would be joining Avex Pictures beginning April 1, 2018.[1]

On October 1, 2024, Tokui announced her marriage to a non-celebrity. She is the third member of μ's, after Suzuko Mimori and Riho Iida, and the third member of Milky Holmes, after Izumi Kitta and Suzuko Mimori, to get married.

Personality & Hobbies

Sora Tokui describes herself as an otaku and is skilled at drawing, also working as a manga artist. She enjoys collecting bishoujo (beautiful girl) figures, to the extent that she purchased a high-quality camera specifically for photographing them. Tokui is a frequent guest on radio programs and is known for her lively, expressive speaking style, which often surprises fans who are familiar with the quieter characters she sometimes portrays in anime.

She admits to being poor at sports and has said she struggles with the dancing required as a member of Milky Holmes. She often uses distinctive emoticons such as ⊂(^ω^)⊃ and <(。ε゚)> in her communications.

Tokui’s favorite foods include Pepsi Nex, white rice, salmon, and meat, while she dislikes boiled eggs, tofu, and tomato juice.

In earlier years, Tokui had the habit of referring to herself using the masculine pronoun "boku," a trait she later revealed was unintentionally developed from repeatedly practicing her lines for the character Nero Yuzurizaki.[2]

For reasons she has not disclosed, Tokui is particularly uncomfortable with descending flights of stairs—a fact well known among her fellow voice actresses. This quirk has been playfully referenced in Milky Holmes media, including a clip where Izumi Kitta mimics her cautious stair descent. During the group’s fourth live concert, she was even escorted down the stairs by two backup dancers for the performance of Nico Puri ♡ Jyoshi dou and her unsteady descent was also noted at the start of Kaguya no Shiro de Odoritai

The main character of her manga, Mahou Shoujo Jitaku-chan, is largely based on Tokui’s own personality and experiences as a self-admitted "home security guard" (自宅警備員, a term describing stay-at-home nerds).

A devoted fan of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tokui especially admires the character Asuka Langley Soryu, whom she has cosplayed on multiple occasions. She credits Asuka’s voice actress, Yūko Miyamura, as her inspiration for becoming a voice actress herself[3]. Tokui’s enthusiasm for the franchise is evident in her long-time Asuka-themed Twitter account, her handle "tokui_sorangley," and her listed location as "Tokyo-3." In 2012, she attended the earliest screening of Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo in Asuka cosplay, accompanied by Yurika Kubo, and was interviewed as a regular attendee by the TV program ZIP!. On February 6, 2015, she shared a screenshot showing her donation to a crowdfunding project to send a replica of the Spear of Longinus to the moon.[4]

Mangaka

As mentioned in her profile, Sora Tokui is skilled at drawing and, alongside her primary career as a voice actress, is also active as a manga artist.

She has contributed to the Milky Holmes franchise by creating the "Tried Drawing a Manga" 「マンガ描いてみた篇」 segment for its commercial. Tokui has serialized the four-panel manga Mahou Shoujo★Jitaku-chan in the free magazine Otapoke, and the series Makeruna!! Aku no Gundan! in the monthly magazine Monthly Bushiroad. Notably, Makeruna!! Aku no Gundan! was adapted into a TV anime in the spring of 2017.

Dengeki G's Magazine January 2011 - Character Interview [5]
About Nico

Nice to meet you! It's the super indoors-type Tokui Sora. Nico-chan is full of energy and is cute, and her catchphrase "Nico Nico Nii♪" has caught my interest. Whether it's her nature or a calculated act is a riddle, but acting in the "Nico world" with everything I have is always fun.

Nico's Appeal
When Nico took first place in the mid-point results announcement (of the character popularity vote the other day), I was really shocked! Please support her with your next vote as well so that she can take the first place! Please use your vote for Nico Ni, Nico Nico! (lol)

A word for the readers
Everyone! Nico Nico Nico Nii♪ It's Yazawa Nico! Please spend this year's winter with Nico! Even though it's cold, if the two of us go Nico Nico Nii~ together, I think it'll definitely become a warm winter. Do lots and lots of Nico Nico Nii! Doki☆

Dengeki G's Magazine Interview Before Final Live[6]
Q1: Please tell us what is something that can't be missing when doing a μ's concert!

Breakfast! As expected, lives require lots of energy, so I always eat breakfast properly! And then my manicure too, I always do them shinily to my taste before any large concerts. Our costumes have lots of sparkling things too, so matching the costumes is the best! (lol)

Q2: Tell us what you feel about the final solo concert, as well as a message for the readers!
I'm really thrilled right now! Though it took some time to sort my feelings out after learning that it was our final live, hearing μ's lines in the movie made me feel that these worries are unnecessary. As the grand culmination of all of μ's lives, I want to make our final live the greatest one. Though Tokyo Dome is an extraordinarily large stage, I want to properly convey our emotions to everyone, and hear everyone's voices clearly. I want to be able to feel everyone's closeness to us!

Trivia

  • Due to her long working history with Mimori Suzuko, the pair enjoys a tight friendship. They often celebrate their birthdays together with other voice-actresses from Milky Holmes.
  • She also is a heavy fan of the NicoMaki pairing alongside Pile, though her relationship with the other voice actress does not appear to be as close as to other members of the team, possibly a result of a lack of collaboration opportunities. Nevertheless, BiBi as a unit have said they get along well during the interview compiled in the 5th Live's pamphlet, and both Yoshino Nanjo and Pile address and refer to her by her given name directly without any honorifics or suffixes, showing their familiarity.
  • She is the only member to have consistently addressed Yoshino Nanjo and Aya Uchida as "Nanjou-san" and "Uchida-san" respectively, out of respect for their seniority to her in the voice acting industry.
  • She reviews her JP Wikipedia article from time to time, and has pointed out inaccuracies in it. However, she does not seem to have edited said inaccuracies out herself.
  • She can sing μ's songs and anime songs well during karaoke. [8]
  • The ninth and last episode of the program Emitsun Fight Club was aired on December 26, which also happens to be her birthday. Fellow voice actresses Emi Nitta, Yurika Kubo, and Riho Iida held a tiny celebration for her, much to her surprise.[9]
  • She has stated that "Natsuiro Egao de 1,2,Jump!" is her favorite μ's song because it was the first song that had Nico as the center.
