Lanzhu Zhong

Lanzhu Zhong is a main character in Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club. She is a second-year student at Nijigasaki High School. She recently transferred from Hong Kong and is fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese. She is a member of R3BIRTH, a unit under Nijigaku. Her image color is pink gold.[1]
In All Stars, she was the leader and founder of the Association.
Background
Lanzhu applied to Nijigasaki with her good friend Mia Taylor. She is childhood friends with the current student council president, Shioriko Mifune.
She was first introduced in Chapter 19 of the All Stars story and since Chapter 20, she is the leader of the Association, which she created as a way to help the members of the Club, which she admires greatly, to improve by working with professionals she hired. She initially banned the Club in order to force its members to join the Association but later allowed it to exist again in parallel with it until the latter's subsequent dissolution in Chapter 28.
In Chapter 29, Lanzhu apologizes to the Protagonist about her previous actions and officially joins the School Club as its 13th member and 12th school idol alongside Mia.[2]
Personality
Since she was a kid, Lanzhu was treated as a gifted girl due to her noticeable talents in many fields. However, this generated insecurity in her as she was always eventually left by others because she was treated as "special" and not as an equal among her peers.
Despite showing herself as a charismatic girl, her unique personality tends to catch others off guard by how demanding she can be with them so that they achieve excellent results like her, which leads her to make questionable decisions and to treat people in a way that usually makes them feel insulted. Even so, she doesn't hesitate to seek every possible way to befriend others.
Lanzhu shows herself to be very competitive and somewhat arrogant in the anime, though, she doesn't appear as hostile and rude towards the Club as in the game.
Appearance
Lanzhu has a slim figure. She has long pinkish platinum-colored hair that she styles into tied pigtails on both sides of her head and light greyish blue eyes. She has a beauty mark under her right eye.
In the anime, she has high hair loops on top of her pigtails instead.

Etymology
- Lanzhu means "haze, mist, vapor" (嵐) (lan) and "beads, vermilion, red-lacquered, pace back and forth" (珠) (zhu).
- Zhong means "bell/alarm bell/call bell/doorbell/hour bell, gong, horologe, horometer, hour, ring, timepiece, tocsin, watch/wristwatch, chime" (鐘).
Trivia
- Lanzhu fulfills the smile attribute of the Nijigaku second years, sharing both an attribute and year with Ai Miyashita. In All Stars, she fulfills the cool attribute instead.
- Lanzhu is the first character in the Love Live! franchise to sing a trilingual song.
- In SIFAS Chapter 26, it's revealed that Lanzhu is just as bad at cooking as Setsuna.
- Lanzhu has similar features to Kotori Minami:
- Both are second year students.
- Their mothers are chairwomen in their respective schools.
- Despite the claims that she came from Hong Kong, Lanzhu's nationality has more hallmarks of a Mainland Chinese person than a Hongkonger given how her English-translated name is pronounced, her frequent usage of Mandarin Chinese (as Cantonese is the only dominant language in Hong Kong), her songs are more reminiscent of Mandopop than Cantopop, and her general school idol outfits leaning to a stereotypical Chinese clothing.
- It should be noted that her surname "鐘" (a combination of "金" and "童") is not an actual family name, as the correct one is "鍾" ("金" and "重").
- In Lanzhu's signature, she stylistically spells her name as "L'ange", meaning "the angel" in French.
- Prior to the confirmation of her potential appearance in the Nijigasaki High School Idol Club anime's second season, a leaked listing of the 6th Capsule Rubber Mascot line indirectly supported this hypothesis, as Lanzhu is drawn wearing the anime-styled bowtie.
