μ's (pronounced "Muse") was a school idol group formed and led by Honoka Kosaka in Love Live!. They were the school idol group of Otonokizaka High School. The group consisted of nine members and was initially formed with the purpose of bringing attention to the school as it was to be shut down due to a lack of future enrolling students. They originally debuted with the single Bokura no LIVE Kimi to no LIFE, released on August 13, 2010, and disbanded prior to the release of their final single, MOMENT RING, in 2016.

Their real life counterpart ended activities as a group on April 1, 2016, with the Final Live. However, the group returned for the series's 9th anniversary with the single A song for You! You? You!! on March 25th, 2020. They also performed at Love Live Fest in 2020.

Etymology

The name "μ's" came from Greek Mythology's 'nine goddesses of music'.

In the anime, Nozomi Tojo is the one who grants the group this name by placing it in a box. In the manga, however, it is Honoka Kosaka who does by writing the name on her own in Love Live! submission form. However, despite the meaning of the group's name, μ's had performed several times without all nine members present in the anime.

• 6 members in Season 2 Episode 5. (Love wing bell)

In addition, three of the six insert songs in the movie (Hello, Hoshi o Kazoete; ？←HEARTBEAT and Future style) are performed with only 3 members of the same year from each song.

In reality, the group name "μ's" was decided through a cellphone poll by fans, with voting taking place between October 30 - November 14, 2010. The nominated candidates were:

Always stretching out into the distance no matter how far, seemingly sucked into the blue sky. The small charm my grandma gave me, attached to my bag ever since I entered school. The new dress I bought last week. The pancakes topped with tons of cream and syrup, that I ate at the new shop which is the talk of the town. Also, my stuffed bunny Sally-chan that had always been with me since childhood, sleeping with me on the same bed even till now. The triple-cone ice-cream that everyone stops by to eat on their way home after classes. The slightly short skirt that flutters pleasingly with just a bit of my dancing. Once I think of these fun things--- Somehow, I feel like singing. Aah~ ♪ The blue skies above. Looking up at them brings a mysterious--- Pure white feeling. Almost as if I could grasp the world in my hands. It makes me feel as if I could do anything. I am really just a normal girl but--- If I work hard--- If I work really, really hard--- If it's us--- Could we help the school? It was something I had never even imagined. After all, this is a large street--- Akihabara, a place where people gather from afar on weekends, Kanda district, with both Kanda Shrine and shops that have been here for ages, and also Jimbocho, the street famous for its book stores--- Even though so many people can be seen so close by, our school that's sandwiched between these districts is---. In the past, there had been lots and lots more students here. That's why my mother and grandmother had, of course, graduated from this school. That's why--- Lately. With the student count steadily dropping--- It's a lonely sunset. Watching it makes me feel like crying. Why did things turn out this way? I had thought it would always be here, without changing. The classroom windows where I can see the wide blue skies. The corridors where I would make the teachers mad if I ran. The lawn where I would talk with my friends after sneaking out from classes. The music room where we often went for choral competitions. The tree-lined street where we were welcomed by the ancient cherry blossom trees during the full bloom of the school entrance ceremony. All these will be gone. Our beloved school. Our precious memories. After learning that they would be gone, we felt like fools, realizing their importance for the first time. But, we have no idea what we should do, And we're unsure whether we can even do something like that, But as expected, we have to do something at least, or nothing will start. Agreeing on that, we managed to gather our courage--- Something we decided upon after thinking together. That's--- We will become idols! If we become idols, And everyone learns about us, They would definitely gain interest in our school, right---. Of course, becoming something like idols--- We know that it isn't going to be an easy task. After all, we--- don't have any sort of talent or special skills. We're just normal girls. But, something that normal girls without any power can do is--- With their greatest smiles--- With their true feelings--- "Please look at us!!"--- Appealing to the world is all that we can do. It's alright even if we only reach a single person at first. That's why you are--- If, you happen to be that first person, and gain interest in us--- That would be our beginning. We are only just beginning from this moment on. Though nothing may come true, We'll aim towards our huge dream. We want you to watch us doing so--- Our dream--- Won't you grant it together with us?

Prologue Story;2 (September 2010)

And in the outskirts of this district--- In an old corner between Jimbochou and Kanda are our homes and our beloved school that we go to everyday. Lots of cars pass through, there are many large buildings--- and of course it's packed full of flashy billboards for computers, electric appliances, games, and anime. "Is there really a school here?" you ask. For first-timers there are lots of surprising things, But take a look! Even in this city... The sky is surprisingly--- high and vast♡ Atop the bridge overlooking the river, running nearby are the busy Chuo and Sobu Lines. Railways to cities and places we don't know. Busy-looking adults. Passing in front of our eyes--- is a scenery of a city that never rests for a moment. It's a bustling, gray, common picture you can find anywhere---. But, we've gotten used to it--- and it's a very, very dear sight to us. It's this town where we'll start from now to protect our beloved school. After we decided we want to be idols, all our breaks and time after school have been spent coming up with ideas, discussing them together, and hand-making costumes. We borrowed our school's Home Econs room, and tried sewing though we're not used to it. While we sew we also practice our songs together. I wonder how many times I've pricked my fingers on the needle - ahaha♡ Wearing these costumes--- We'll finally be filming our first PV today! Maki's surprise attack earlier scared me a bit more than usual. I guess I must be really nervous, huh? It's finally here! The first time--- that we'll be standing in front of you as idols. Trivia

• During the early months of the project, the group was actually named "Love Live!". This was before any concrete plot had been conceived yet.
• Several polls determined the names of the subunits: Printemps, BiBi, and lily white.
• Based on polls, the member with the most votes would be given the center position of the next music video. For example, Nico was the center of Natsuiro Egao de 1,2,Jump! (夏色えがおで1,2,Jump!, Natsuiro Egao de 1,2,Jump!) because she won a poll.
  • For some music videos, polls also determined the idols' hairstyles and costumes.
