The first generation of the group consisted of five members and debuted with Hajimari wa Kimi no Sora, on April 7, 2021. In Love Live Days! Volume 27, four additional members were revealed as the second generation, who debuted with WE WILL!! on August 3, 2022. Love Live Days! Volume 39 later revealed two additional members for the third generation, who debuted in Jump Into the New World on August 2, 2023.
The name of the group is an amalgamation of the French verb lier (to link), referencing the first kanji in Yuigaoka (結) and the Spanish, Italian or French adjective brillante (shining).[2][3] The words lier and brilliante also have a meaning of "bond" and "shine" in English.[4]Template:-

This group photo was taken at the gates of Yuigaoka Girls' High School. The following is a conversation that unfolded behind these five smiles.
(One day at Yuigaoka Girls' High School, the five girls are preparing to take a group shot as school idols.) Chisato: Is everybody ready? I'm going to start the timer! Sumire: Hey, hold on! Just hold on one second. Why am I not standing in the middle? Keke: It was fated by nature to happen. Sumire: What's nature got to do with anything?! Chisato: Well, I thought maybe it was best if Kanon-chan was in the middle? Ren: Yes. We've already gathered around Kanon-san before. It all fits in perfectly. Kanon: R-Really? Because I'd honestly feel more comfortable being a little more off to the side... Chisato: You're going on about that again? You really should have more confidence, Kanon-chan. Ren: By the way, what kind of expression shall we display for the photo? Keke: We should use the Special School Idol Smile! Anyone who sees it will be so smitten that they'll have no choice but to support us! Sumire: You're referring to my very own Galactic Smile aren't you? *smiles* Keke: No, that's not it. Sumire: At least look at it before saying anything! Chisato: Say, should we dance to a song before taking the picture? I bet we'd feel a lot better and it might calm the nerves! Ren: Of course, there is that technique as well. First, it might be best to stretch our face muscles before taking... Kanon: *giggle* Chisato: Well don't you seem happy, Kanon? Kanon: It's just that, it's kinda fun watching you guys be all over the place. And so naturally I... Keke: Ah! Kanon, that's it! That smile! Kanon: Huh? Keke: Just now, that super cute smile of yours! Ren: Yes, it seems the most important thing is the time we spend having fun together. Sumire: W-Well if that's supposed to be the case, then it's been fun since the beginning! Keke: Same here! Well since we're all smiles now, let's go take that picture! Chisato: Okay then! Now this time I'm really gonna start that timer! Kanon: (I'm able to smile because we're together. I want to continue experiencing moments like these from now on.) At the time of forming, Liella! was the first school idol group to only consist of first years, as well as five members.
The addition of the new members makes Liella! the second group (following Nijigaku) to have new members added after its formation and consist of more than nine members.
Liella! is the second main school idol group (and third overall, including Saint Snow) to have blood relative members, the first being Aqours.
Liella! is the only main group to have won Love Live!:
